West coast of Sumbawa, Indonesia. Across the Alas Strait from Lombok.

Where Rinjani Bay Is

Rinjani Bay sits on the west coast of Sumbawa, in the regency of Kabupaten Sumbawa Barat. To the west, across the Alas Strait, is Lombok. Behind the bay, the volcanic ridge of Sumbawa rises into trekking country. In front, the Indian Ocean opens onto some of Indonesia’s most consistent surf coastline.

About Sumbawa

Sumbawa lies east of Lombok and west of Flores. The island is bigger than both, with volcanic ridges in the interior, terraced rice fields on the slopes, and a long coastline of bays and reef breaks. For decades the island was known mostly to surfers, anglers, and serious divers. It stayed off the main tourism map.

West Sumbawa is the part of the island closest to Bali and Lombok by air. It’s the side facing the Alas Strait, with a coastline of surf reefs and protected bays. Rinjani Bay sits on this coast.

The local population on Sumbawa is roughly 1.5 million across four regencies, with Kabupaten Sumbawa Barat (where Rinjani Bay is located) being one of the smaller and least-developed. The dominant local ethnic group on the west of the island is the Samawa people.

How to Get to Rinjani Bay

The new West Sumbawa Regional Airport changed what was previously a long journey into a manageable one. From Bali or Singapore, Rinjani Bay is now a same-day trip with one transfer.

Located just 20 minutes from the new West Sumbawa Regional Airport, Rinjani Bay has transitioned from a remote outpost to a de-risked destination for international patrons.
